چکیده
In our Select pages, we highlight exciting themes that have emerged from our review of the recent literature on a particular topic. In this issue, we present Neurobiology Select in which we discuss a cluster of recent papers that increases our understanding of complex human neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, Tourette’s syndrome, and developmental dyslexia. Some of the genes implicated in the etiology of these diseases encode proteins that regulate neuronal morphology. There is also evidence that microRNAs (miRNAs) may contribute to the regulation of neuronal morphology and possibly to disease.

Neurobiology Select
Migration of neurons is crucial for brain development. Equally essential to this developmental process is the specific transport of proteins within the neuron for axonal and dendritic specification. This Neurobiology Select highlights new findings that shed light on the mechanisms regulating both the movement of proteins within neurons and the movement of neuronal cells themselves within the de...

Emerging roles for epigenetic modifications and chromatin remodeling in the nervous system provide the focal point for this issue’s Neurobiology Select. Recent evidence shows that changes in chromatin structure are critical to the reconsolidation of fear memories. Other new papers characterize the regulation of neural stem cells by histone acetylation and establish roles for epigenetic modifica...

The dopaminergic neurons of the central nervous system regulate behavior associated with reward and punishment. Loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra leads to Parkinson’s disease. This issue’s Neurobiology Select discusses the discovery of a neural circuit involved in decision making in flies and a report showing that associative learning shifts the timing of dopamine signaling in ro...
متن کاملSynchrony: a neuronal mechanism for attentional selection?
Attentional selection involves brain processes that select and control the flow of information into the mechanisms that underlie perception and consciousness. One theory proposes that the neural activity that represents the stimuli or events to be attended to is selected through modification of its synchrony. Recent experimental evidence supports this theory, by showing that changes in attentio...
متن کاملObject-based vision and attention in primates.
In forming a representation of a visible object, the brain must analyze the visual scene pre-attentively, select an object through active attention, and form representations of the multiple attributes of the selected object. During the past two years, progress has been made in understanding the neural underpinnings of these processes by means of single-neuron recording in monkeys.
